Jack Knight sat there staring at the table.

“Jack?”

He looked up at Ted Grant. “Terry was a badass, wasn’t he?”

Ted just grinned. “Yeah, he was. No powers to speak of, yet he took out the whole JSA. Might have even taken Wonder Woman, too, if he hadn’t been under Brain Wave’s control.”

Jack sighed. “All right, Lardcat. You made your point. I’d rather it was Terry, but if I haven’t burned all my bridges, I want to learn what I need to learn to be as good a Starman as my dad.”

“All right, kid. But quit with the Lardcat stuff.”

“I will when you quit scarfing down all those Dunkin Donuts.”

The Shade put down his pen and closed his journal. There was a knock at the door, and then it opened. Matt O’Dare entered.

“We were right. There’s something wrong with Jules Black. He’s under some sort of mind-control.”

The Shade shook his head. “One of the Mist’s more annoying powers. I myself am immune, but few others are. Unfortunately, he is immune to my powers as well.”

“Why not just tell the JSA? Surely they would come in and take the Mist down!”

“I have no doubt they would, but as I told Doctor Mid-Nite, Andy Murphy will get his comeuppance in a much more appropriate manner.”

Matt just shook his head. “How’s your guest?

The Shade gestured toward the back of the house. “Much the same, but I suppose it would not hurt to check.”

The two men made their way to a large room in the back of the house. Inside, a nurse tended to a man lying on a bed, attached to a multitude of monitoring equipment.

“Any change?”

“No, Matt. But at least the Mist is blissfully unaware, though in a coma, David Knight is very much alive.”
